Port Sunlight was created in a well-established soap industry that was widespread with extensive trading routes.

To be able to compete with the vast competition William Lever needed something to make him stand out. Unlike his competitors he was able to find a new kind of soap with high proportions of copra oil or palm oil which made the soap harder, making it easier to use.
