Grade II listed buildings are subject to regulations which protect their historical and architectural significance. Alterations to these buildings can only be granted by written consent from the relevant authorities.

Given that the majority of the buildings at Port Sunlight are protected in this way, it makes it difficult to carry out the necessary renovations to enable to village to drastically lower its carbon emissions.

However, there are a few exceptional examples of this kind of retrofit within the UK.
