Town formation

The town's primary objective was to offer a healthy and suitable environment for the town's working class residents.

Port Sunlight - Port Sunlight's plan is radical; the dwellings are surrounded by landscape, all service space is concentrated in the centre, and the factory is located to the south of the town.

Crespi d'Adda - The plan of Crespi d'Adda is linear, the residences are positioned on the eastern part of the town and the factory on the western side next to the river Adda. All the residences were surrounded by small garden and the larger greenbelt were positioned across residential space.

Positive -

In general, the Port Sunlight planning arrangement was more efficient in terms of others pace, as the houses were surrounded by landscape, which values the people's total well-being.
All of the cities described above adopted the garden city model in terms of planning, but the Port Sunlight succeeded in terms of design, which is why the town continues to thrive after 125 years.

New Lanark - New Lanark is a linear town; the factory is located on the western side of town, close to the river, while the residential area is located on the northern side, separating the factory from the residential area by a service area. The landscape was located on the town's eastern edge, adjacent to residential space.

Saltaire - Similar to Crespi d'Adda, the town of Saltaire is also linear in shape, but the buildings are terraced and lack a front yard.
The factory situated in the town's northern eastern section, distant from the residential sector. And the northern section was separated from the town and factory by a river.

Failure -

  1. Now, around 600 of the houses are privately owned and 300 are looked after by the Port Sunlight Village Trust who rent them out, only a small number of people who live in Port Sunlight work in the factory. The rent of the houses are a lot in term of other place around the village.

  2. The house's upkeep is rather pricey.

  3. The site that was initially designated for the garden has been transformed into a parking lot.

  4. Originally, the town was intended to be a closed community equipped with all necessary services.
However, the town has become more of an open town, devoid of market space.
