Leverville - 'moral' capitalism

Leverville - 'moral' capitalism

During the Lever Brothers’ expansion, they were required obtain additional oil supply for their factories. To achieve this, they signed a deal with the Belgian Government and were tasked to build new plantations in the at the time Belgian Congo. Lord Lever had envisioned a new model village like Port Sunlight in today’s Democratic republic of Congo.

The concept proved to be unsuccessful as the Congolese people refused to work under the provided conditions, which was rationed food, long hours and living in camps far from home. The refusal of the workforce was detrimental to the enterprise. As a result, the developers resorted to forced labour and immoral employment practices.

Although the settlement was ultimately abandoned by Lever Brothers their original planning driven by the Garden City concept can still be seen on the southern shore.
